Coaching & Scouting Staff
Jon Jonasson Head Coach/General Manager
The Helena Bighorns Junior Hockey Club is proud to announce the signing of our new head coach, Jon Jonasson.
Coach Jonasson, a USA Hockey Level 4 coach, comes to us from the Steele County Blades Jr. A in Owatonna, MN, where he was the Head Coach and Assistant General Manager since 2012. Before that, he was Director of Scouting for the Cheyenne Stampede Jr A, a position he took after his assistant coaching duties with the Phoenix Polar Bears of the Western States Hockey League, tier III Junior A.
As a player, Jon played his junior hockey in the MNJHL and a stint in professional hockey with Evansville Icemen (AAHL).
Jon has many years of playing, coaching, scouting and recruiting experience; all of which will play a major role in taking the team into a new era of Helena Bighorns Hockey.
Below is an official statement from Coach Jonasson:
“I am excited to be given the opportunity to be involved in the Helena Bighorns organization. Helena has had an outstanding reputation the last 10+ years with Scott Cunningham at the helm, and I look forward to helping build and continue the traditions that he has created in Helena. By stepping in as coach in Helena I have no plan to fill Scott’s shoes, as I am not the same coach. My plan is to continue the tradition of player development, advancement and winning standards that he has left for the next coach to take over. I wish Scott and his family the best of luck in Brooks in pursuing his future in coaching at the next level! My family are I are looking forward to taking the next step in our future in Helena and making it our new home."
Brad Ouldhouse- Assistant Coach
Brad comes to the team with a history rich in hockey. A player since 1992 and USA Hockey Level 5 certified coach since 2009, he brings a wealth of experience from every place hockey has ever taken him. He joins the coaching staff this season in addition to his front office duties for the Bighorns.
Brad began his hockey career as a youth player in Bozeman, MT with the Bozeman Amateur Hockey Association. After high school and midget AA, junior playing experiences in Casper, WY and Albuquerque NM lead him to his final stop with the NAHL Bozeman Icedogs in 1998-‘99.
As a coach, Brad has shared the ice with every age and skill level, from 8U to professional instruction. Junior coaching experience came in 2007 with the expansion Rogue Valley Wranglers in the NPHL (NORPAC) Jr A, then to Cody, WY as an assistant for the Yellowstone Quake. His last coaching stop was in Scottsdale, AZ with the Midget Major 18U AAA Junior Coyotes in the Tier-1 Elite AAA League. Between stops, He coached youth hockey in Bozeman, MT and Helena, MT, including Team MT Head Coach for the 95's in 2009 at the Northern Plains District Development Camp.
Brad continues to coach youth hockey in Helena. While coaching at the bantam age last season and serving as the HAYHA Coach-in-Chief, he is also the President and Head Instructor of the Helena Hockey Academy.
Craig Reinhardt- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Craig is a level 4 USA Hockey certified coach joining the Bighorns after seven seasons with Missoula Montana's youth hockey program, the last four seasons as coach of The Missoula Bruins Varsity hockey team. He coached ACHA club hockey with The University of Montana for two seasons. Craig has also been involved with state and regional development and has served as head coach of Team Northwest.
Greg Sousa- Director of Recruiting
Director of Recruiting Greg Sousa
Sousa (pronounced “soo-za”) will be a great asset to the Bighorns as Greg continues to bring in top-notch players with talent and character, through his extensive travel and numerous contacts throughout the entire US.
Greg served in this role with Coach Jonasson last season with the Steele County Blades of the MNJHL and continues to bring his passion of the game and his analytical eye for talent and potential. As quoted in an article by Biscuits and Breezers on JuniorHockey.com, Souza says “As I became familiar with [Jon’s] system and his coaching style, I could tell that he has what it takes to be an outstanding hockey coach - one that focuses on his players' development and progression in the game. His willingness to spend the time to develop his players and his ability to create a team that is more family than line mates is something not many coaches can do successfully. When the off-season began, recruiting kicked into high gear - showcases and camps every week. After the first road trip and camp we attended together, we knew we had built a great system in place for not only finding talent, but building a team with humble and hard-working players. Jon asked me to join him in Helena as the Director of Recruiting. After working so hard on the system and vision we both share, as well as the trust I have in him as a great coach, I couldn't say anything but yes!” (To read the full article, click the link below.)
The Bighorns are very excited to have Greg on board for the 2014-’15 Season!
